Agencies may legally pay consulting Physician Advisors or Medical Directors for specific services provided to the agency. Some of these functions include:

• Acting as an advocate for the agency to physician community and to intervene in case of physician problems
• Education - i.e., teach assessment skills to clinical staff, assist/review staff development and patient education materials
• Development and maintenance of specialty programs
• Quality improvement - participate in Utilization Review and Quality Improvement processes
• Medical decision making or interpretation of social, political, regulatory, or economic factors that impact patient care or the agency.
• Research - clinical research in the home
• Ethical Consultant - development of ethics policies and decisions with medical input regarding ethical patient care issues
